Making Icecream

As part of our Technology unit, we made ice cream today! We had to use milk, sugar, vanilla essence, ice and lots of shaking the container to make it freeze!

Dear Parents/Caregivers

I hope you have had a lovely time with your family these holidays. Welcome back to a busy and final term for the year and a special welcome to our two new families. We have got a trip to the Christchurch Art Gallery for our clay unit later in the term, a visit from The Ultimate Canines trick dog team to learn about dog safety and a visit to the Christmas Grotto Experience.

Athletics
We have been busy practicing for our Athletics Day coming up on Friday 21st October from 1.00-3.00 pm for juniors. The children will be moving around in mixed age house teams from Rooms 1, 9,10 and 12 and the children will wear suitable mufti clothes in their house colours and school sunhats to school on this day. The events are modified shot put, discus, long jump and high jump and the focus is on learning the correct technique. This will be followed by running races, and some fun activities to finish. Please come down and watch if you are able to – we really value your support.

Swimming
In weeks 4-5 (31 Oct – 10 Nov) we begin daily swimming lessons, including a water safety lesson. You will receive a permission slip to fill out and return to school and we will require parent helpers to get the children changed and across the road to Kings Swim School so if you are able to help, please indicate this on the form. Please help your child become independent with getting dried and dressed over the next couple of weeks. I have got a few pairs of smaller girls second hand shorts that are in excellent condition if anyone wants to purchase them for $5 each – they are an optional alternative to the pinafore in terms 4 and 1 and make it much easier for swimming instead of the pinafore! Also, please ensure your child can manage getting their own shoes on and off.

Inquiry Topic
We are studying technology this term and how we can follow the technology process to problem solve: Identify the problem, brainstorm possible solutions, design a plan, make it, test and modify it. This is a great way for students to think critically to problem solve. As part of this unit, we will have a visit from ‘The Kite Lady’ where the children will design and make their own kites to take home and enjoy.
Maths
We continue to work on addition, subtraction and mathematics knowledge for the majority of the term and will
be studying length, area and temperature later in the term for the mathematics strand. We will explore fractions again for the last week of school.

Religious Education
We begin the term with Imaginative Prayer, and will then look at Communion of Saints which focuses on Mary. We will move into Advent and Christmas at the end of the term. Watch out for the family-whanau information sheet at the beginning of these topics.

Writing
This term children will be learning how to write simple procedures and will continue work on recounts.

Don’t forget to check out your child’s work on Seesaw and leave a comment for them. You can also invite other family members to join Seesaw so they can share in your child’s learning too.

If you have any questions about anything, please email me at susanne.stack@olv.school.nz, or make a time to come and see me.

Warm Regards
