Dear Parents/Caregivers

Welcome back to a busy and final term for the year and a special welcome to our new families. We now have 21 children in Room 10, so if you have any spare time in the morning with no pre-schoolers, we would love your help!

Athletics
We have been busy practicing for our Athletics Day coming up on Thursday from 1.00-3.00 pm. The children will be moving around in mixed groups from Rooms 1, 9 and 10. The events are modified shot put, discus and high jump and the focus is on learning the correct technique. This will be followed by running races, and if time and weather allow, we will have some fun activities to finish. Please come down and watch if you are able to – we really value your support. Children need to wear suitable mufti clothes for the day and will need a school sun hat.

Swimming
In week five (9 Nov – 20 Nov) we begin daily swimming lessons, with a water safety lesson on the first Wednesday. Thank you to the families that have returned their permission slips, and for those parents able to help. Please help your child become independent with getting dried and dressed over the next couple of weeks. I have got a few pairs of smaller girls second hand shorts that are in excellent condition if anyone wants to purchase them for $5 each – they make it much easier for swimming instead of the pinafore! Also, please ensure your child can manage getting their own shoes on and off. J

Inquiry Topic
We are studying food and nutrition this term, and the children have already enjoyed a visit from Harold the Giraffe from Life Education last week. We are looking at the five different food groups, and how we need to eat a balanced diet of things from all the food groups. Please try and ensure your child’s lunchbox is full of fresh healthy food, not processed and sugary foods as this affects their ability to learn. We are integrating art – printmaking and Te Reo into this inquiry topic as well.

Maths
We have explored fractions in week one, and are studying time, temperature and area later in the term for the mathematics strand. We continue to work on addition, subtraction and mathematics knowledge for the majority of the term.

Religious Education
We have started to look at the Communion of Saints which focuses on Mary. We will then move into Advent and Christmas. Watch out for the family-whanau information sheet at the beginning of these topics.

Writing
This term children will be learning how to write simple explanations on food and nutrition - how different food helps our body.

Don’t forget to check out our class blog through the OLV School website - we often post pictures and stories of the children at work.

If you have any questions about anything, please email me at susanne.stack@olv.school.nz, or make a time to come and see me.

Warm Regards
